Colon Cancer Prognosis And Stages
The chance of survival or surviving for an extended number of years when one has colon cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) is generally good if the condition is detected early. Some people however who are already in higher cancer stages may actually still have some reason to be hopeful. The right treatment is really the key to a good colon cancer prognosis.
Stages
Colon cancer prognosis is often dependent on the stage in which the patient is in. Untreated and advanced cancer may lead to only a 20% chance of surviving for five years after diagnosis. Some however may actually have a 90% chance of surviving after diagnosis if the cancer is treated early. This is only quite natural. The worse one's condition and spread of cancer cells are, the least likely will treatment be effective and encompassing. Given below are the different stages of colon cancer and possible survival chances.
Stage 0
Others also know this stage as the initial stage. At this point, the cancer cells may restrict themselves to the rectum lining. Some cells may also already be found in the first part lining of the colon. One of the most common ways to treat this stage is through a surgical method. Some patients may actually need no other treatment than surgery. People who are at this stage have the highest rate of survival.
Stage 1
At this stage, the cancer cells may already be found deeper in the colon. There is however no movement or metastasis to other external tissues and organs. The cancer cells are therefore still restricted within the colon. Those who are at this stage may have to undergo a procedure known as resection. They may not yet be required to undergo other supplementary cancer treatments and procedures. Survival rate is still good at this stage.
Stage 2
Stage 2 is when other tissues other than those found in the colon are affected. This may already be some sort of a close call for some patients because of the movement of cancer cells. There is still great reason to be hopeful though since the cells have not yet moved into the lymph system which is a crucial system through which cancer cells metastasize. Surgery may still be a preferred mode of treatment. Depending on the patient's condition and risk factor as determined by a specialist doctor, other common cancer treatments may be employed simultaneously. These involve radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Stage 3
This is already considered an advanced stage since the lymphatic system is already affected by cancer cells. All three common cancer treatment options may be used to fight the spread of the cells. Patients at this stage have a lower colon cancer prognosis than those in stages 1 and 2.
Stage 4
This is the final and most severe stage. The condition can no longer be removed completely despite treatment. Cancerous cells may have already spread through the lymphatic system to other organs in the body such as the lungs and liver. Of course, treatment will still be employed but patients may only have a survival rate of around 20%.
The stage that the cancer has reached will ultimately have an influence on any colon cancer prognosis. Since the cancer can be arrested at its early stages, it is important to seek to prevent the condition. Those who are at risk of colon cancer and those who are 50 years old and above should always have scheduled screenings.
Metastatic Colon Cancer - A Few Plain Truths
It is estimated that over 100,000 Americans discover that they have colon cancer annually. Many of these cases include those who have been diagnosed with cancer that has metastasized (metastatic colon cancer). Most of us already know that at this stage, treatment may become more complicated and difficult. Some cases though still have some hope for a few years' survival.
Once colon or colorectal cancer has metastasized, it is no longer restricted to the tissues of the colon. It has already moved beyond to other organs of the body. The lymphatic system may be affected first. The cancer cells can then be transported through this same system to other organ cells in the lungs and liver. Other organs may ultimately be affected too.
Those who have been diagnosed metastasized cancer should still consider undergoing treatment. Proper treatment can improve one's chances of extended survival compared to those who do not undergo treatment. Most patients treated for metastatic colon cancer have a 20% to 30% chance of surviving for five more years after diagnosis. Those who do not have cancer cells that have spread to the lungs or liver, have an even higher rate of survival.
Preventing Cancer
It is unfortunate that many people have very mild or no symptoms at the initial stages of cancer during which treatment is most effective. A number of people therefore do not find out about their condition until it is at an advanced stage. The best way to save yourself from the possibility of developing this kind of cancer is to simply prevent it. Although it can strike anybody, you can take precautions against it.
The first aspect that you should check is your lifestyle. There are some lifestyle habits and preferences that could increase a person's chance of developing colon cancer. This includes smoking, eating a lot of fatty foods, not eating enough fibrous and nutrient rich foods and being overweight - all are considered cancer risk factors.
You can also help prevent the advancement to metastatic colon cancer by regularly scheduling yourself for screening. You should always consider this if you have any of the above-mentioned risk factors. Regular screening is also usually advisable for people over 50 years old.
What to Look For
Aside from modifying your lifestyle and regular screening, you can help ensure proper and prompt treatment by watching out for the signs and symptoms of possible colon cancer.
Clear colon cancer symptoms often appear only when the disease is at an advanced stage. There may be some clues though in the initial stages that may tell you that a visit to the doctor should already be scheduled. Consider asking for a doctor's opinion if you have increasingly irregular bowel movements, blood in the stools, and abdominal pains. You can have some other digestive problem but it is better to be sure.
If the cancer cells have metastasized, you could experience a variety of symptoms that will depend on the area that is affected. If the metastatic colon cancer cells move to the lungs, a patient will have evident breathing problems. At this point, stomach bloating and various bodily pains may also emerge.
Is Colon Cancer Nutritionally Based?
Introduction
Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and the leading cause of cancer deaths among non-smokers. It is, in almost all cases, a treatable disease if caught early. Truth: When colon cancer is caught early, it has a 95 percent survival rate. It may be nutritionally based. For example, the incidence is much higher in North America than in China, and the Chinese who migrate to North America have a higher incidence.
Early
Most colorectal cancers are predictable by early diagnosis and screening. In fact, screening prevents more deaths due to early detection than breast or prostate cancer screening. Other research is looking at multiple genes involved in colon cancer and at improving screening techniques so more cancers can be detected early. This includes searching for markers in blood, stool or urine that might provide an easier screening tool to early signs of colon cancer. In general, when treated at an early stage, more than 90% of patients survive at least 5 years after their diagnosis. However, only about 39% of colon cancer is found at an early stage.
Symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the location of the cancer within the colon or rectum, though there may be no symptoms at all. Symptoms of colon cancer can include severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool or rectal bleeding, unexplained loss of weight, or major changes in bowel habits (recurrent constipation or diarrhea). In fact, the most common symptom is no symptoms at all," says Emina Huang, MD. But once these symptoms begin to develop, it may be a sign of more advanced disease. Half of people diagnosed after symptoms develop will die. Finding colorectal cancer before symptoms develop dramatically improves the chance of survival.
Conclusion
"There's no question that the earlier colon cancer is found, the more likely the patient will be cured with surgery. Although the cause is still unknown, there is evidence that most of these cancers arise from polyps (benign intestinal tumors). It has been well demonstrated that if colon cancer is caught in the earliest stages, the cure rate could be increased to 90%.
A Clean Colon Is the Body's First Line of Defense
Number one risk factor for colon cancer is age. Importantly, colon cancer is also one of the most curable forms of cancer. It has been well demonstrated that if colon cancer is caught in the earliest stages, the cure rate could be increased to 90%. Although colon cancer is among the most common forms of cancer, the number of new cases and the number of deaths attributed to the disease have declined in recent years due to improved screening and diagnostic techniques.
Diet and exercise play a huge role in prevention of colon cancer and other health related problems. Colon cancer prevention can help make colon cancer the number one preventable cancer. In the area of prevention, researchers are looking at the effects of curcumin (found in curry), resveratrol (found in red wine), ginger and the Mediterranean diet on the growth and development of colon cancer. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants, which may play a role in cancer prevention. Cancer prevention is a lifelong plan including smart choices in our day to day lives. The Colon Cancer Prevention Program is open to all men and women over age 18 and is based in a newly renovated space conveniently located off the main Health Center lobby.
Diet may shield against two leading cancer killers. Diet is a factor, with red meat and animal fat topping the list of offenders. Studies have shown that a diet high in fat and calories and low in fiber can contribute to colon cancer. Dietary supplementation with 1500 mg of Calcium or more a day is associated with a lower incidence of colon cancer. A high fiber (vegetables) and low fat diet, regular exercise, maintenance of normal body weight and cessation of smoking are also beneficial. Though it is best to get one's vitamins from healthy diet, a recent study did show that women taking the RDA of Folic Acid and Vitamin B6 had a 70% less likely chance of colon cancer. Balanced and proper diet along with herbal cleansers will cleanse the colon over long periods of time but those with serious conditions need to take quick action.
A clean colon, that has a healthy balance of intestinal flora, is the body's first line of defense. Do whatever you can to lead a healthy lifestyle - including eating healthy foods, staying physically active, getting regular checkups and paying attention to your environment. Maintaining a healthy colon is one of the single most important steps you can take to detoxify your body of accumulated toxins and waste. This collaborative effort can help to generate widespread awareness of how to prevent the disease through a healthy lifestyle and regular screening. The benefits of conducting a colon cleansing have been lauded as long as I can remember (long time) as a means of eliminating accumulations of lingering waste from the digestive tract and leaving the body more healthy. In addition to flax seed, the psyllium in MetaCleanse encourages healthy elimination without chemical stimulants or laxatives and provides a daily source of dietary fiber to help maintain regularity.
Exercise has a strong protective effect against colon cancer, as does hormone replacement treatment in women. Exercise daily, keeping in mind that it is important to not overextend yourself while cleansing. Exercise stimulates movement through the bowel and reduces the time the colon is exposed to harmful substances(carcinogens) that may cause cancer. Studies have also found that exercise may increase colon cancer survival rates. I eat right, exercise 5 days a week, drink the minimum 8 glasses of water a day, and the first ingredient I read on a label is not the calories, but how much fiber it contains.
Natural colon cleanse is the most popular colon unclogging method today. Alternatively, several colon cleansers are packaged and supplied as part of a cleansing system that contains the colon cleansing components as a capsule or liquid that is taken with a glass of water plus nutritional shakes or snacks that have been formulated to complement the activity of the primary cleanser.
5 Ways Colon Cleansing Can Prevent Colon Cancer
The typical colon can hold bacteria and be a host to numerous parasites and toxins. If left alone, these toxins can create an environment that is conducive to cancer. Colon cleansing can effectively remove these bacteria, parasites and toxins so that the colon functions properly. Keeping the colon clear and free of debris can help the body dispose of waste quickly and thus help reduce the chance of cancer.
Colon cleansing can be a great start to a clean and healthy colon. Once you cleanse your colon you need to make dietary changes that will help keep the colon working properly. This includes avoiding processed foods and those with additives as well as increasing the intake of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
1. Removing bacteria from the colon.
Cleansing helps to eliminate the host of bad bacteria that often accumulate in a colon. When waste is not eliminated quickly it can turn putrid and become a breeding ground for bacteria. The bacteria can then be re-absorbed into the system causing health problems and possibly cancer.
2. Removing toxins that accumulate in the colon and are absorbed back into the body.
Toxins come from many dietary sources. One of the most common ways is through eating processed foods and those with chemical additives and preservatives. Colon cleansing washes away these toxins to prevent them from remaining in the system where they can cause problems and lead to cancer or other colon disease.
3. Removing mucous buildup.
Mucous can build up on the inner lining of the colon. This mucous can make it impossible for nutrients to be properly absorbed through the colon lining. Mucous can also contribute to improper colon function. The colon cannot properly expel waste when thick mucous is blocking it from working well.
4. Removing parasites.
The colon can be home to many toxins, bacteria and even parasites. Parasites and their eggs and larvae are often present in the human colon. While this doesn't pose a problem under normal circumstances for those with weakened immune systems or those with other diseases the parasites can cause disease.
5. Allowing for frequent bowel movements.
By quickly eliminating waste from the body it does not stay stagnant allowing toxins and bacteria to build up. Instead, frequent elimination keeps the colon clean and healthy and protects it from waste that stays too long in the system.
Awareness Ribbon Enameled Pins - Colon Cancer
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and many people will choose to wear a ribbon pin during that time to raise awareness about this devastating disease. There are several things to consider when purchasing a cause ribbon.
# Color
The Colon Cancer cause ribbon actually has two colors associated with it. The primary color is topaz brown; however, an alternate color of cobalt blue has emerged through the years. While the choice is completely one of personal taste, it should be noted that cobalt blue is also the recognized color for Child Abuse awareness.
# Plain
The style of ribbon is also a question of personal taste. Many people simply choose to use a piece of fabric ribbon from a spool and affix it with either a straight pin or safety pin. However, if a more permanent form of expression is desired, then there's no substitute for a jewelry ribbon with enameled color.
# Angel
While a plain ribbon is fine, a second element can bring an entirely new depth of meaning to the ribbon. For example, when an angel is added to the ribbon, it conveys a message of hope, love, and protection. An angel is especially appropriate for the person battling cancer who wants a positive affirmation of comfort and empowerment.
# Star
While an angel cause ribbon is perfect for ladies, men may prefer an icon they consider to be less feminine. The star is perfect for the gentleman who wants to wear an awareness ribbon that's just a bit different from the rest. Like an angel, a star also conveys a message of hope.
Awareness ribbon enameled pins are a great way to bring the fight against cancer to the forefront. When the ribbon is enhanced with an angel or star, the message becomes even more special!
Six Powerful Ways To Avoid Colon Cancer
At present, experts estimate that one in two persons is likely to develop colon cancer. Despite breakthroughs in cancer research, the number of people who find themselves suffering from this dreaded disease is staggering. One type of cancer that is increasingly becoming common these days is colon cancer. This is second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of death among cancer sufferers in the US.
Although some may be genetically predisposed to developing this dreaded disease, there are actually things that you can do to minimize your risk of having colorectal cancer. Below are top six ways to prevent cancer from developing in the colon and rectal area:
Seek Doctor's Advice
The buzzword when it comes to serious illnesses, including colon cancer, is early detection. A patient's survival is higher if he or she found out about the disease in its early stages. Thus, if you think there is blood, whether fresh or not, in your stool, or if you are experiencing unexplainable weight loss and abdominal pains, then you should have yourself checked immediately.
Maintain A Healthy And Active Lifestyle
A study found that a person's risk for colorectal cancer can be reduced by about 40% if he or she exercises regularly. You really do not have to go to the gym everyday to maintain your health; if you are not really a fan of the gym, you can always perform sports and other physical activities that interest you. Playing badminton, swimming, walking, jogging, hiking, dancing, and mountain climbing are good alternatives to exercise in the gym.
Quit Smoking
A number of studies have confirmed the connection between smoking and various illnesses and conditions. Emphysema, lung problems, heart disease and even colorectal cancer are just some of the serious diseases you might have if you continue to smoke or are a recipient of second-hand smoke.
According to research, tobacco is linked to the development or increase in size of polyps or growths that can be cancerous. Moreover, inhalation and swallowing of tobacco also brings carcinogenic substances not only to your lungs, but to your gut as well. You really will benefit nothing from smoking so it is best to ditch this vice as soon as possible.
Undergo Colon Cancer Screening
By the time you reach 40, you should include stool and digital rectal exam in your annual physical check up as a precautionary measure. By the time you reach 50, it is imperative that you get a colonoscopy every ten years. If you think you are at a high risk of having colon cancer, then have this exam every half a decade. The reason behind having yourself screened for colon cancer when you reach 50 is that over 90% of sufferers of colon cancer in the US are over 50 years old.
You should also ask your doctor about genetic counseling, especially if you have close blood relations who had colon cancer or other malignant growths.
Watch Your Weight
It seems that men and women who are obese are more likely to have this type of cancer than people who are of normal weight. Experts also believe that the kind of body you are in can also be an indication if you are predisposed to having this disease. Research has found that individuals with an apple-shaped body, where fat is concentrated in the waist area, are not only prone to heart conditions and diabetes, but also to colon cancer.
Be Mindful Of What You Eat
There are a lot of thin people who are not healthy. Thus, even if you are thin, there is no guarantee that you will not develop this serious illness. One of the best ways to maintain a healthy body is by eating right. Make sure that you consume at least nine servings of fruits and vegetables a week and drink plenty of water.
